Netscape Navigator was developed by the team who had created the Mosaic web browser at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. The company they created was initially named 'Mosaic Communications Corporation' and their web browser 'Mosaic Netscape ', but a legal challenge from NCSA over the rights to the name resulted in the company and the product being renamed. The name 'Netscape ' was invented by sales representative Greg Sands.

Apple Mac OS 8 was another major overhaul of the OS from the earlier Mac OS 7.It added a new Platinum visual theme, a multi threaded Finder, better virtual memory, and many customization options. 8.5 and later require a PPC CPU. Some of the operating systems that are not supported include: Windows 3.11 or earlier, Windows CE, Mac OS 10.7 or higher, Palm OS, Sega Dreamcast, Sony Playstation 2, Microsoft X-Box, Web TV, Unix/Linux for Mac, and Mobile Phone Web. Version 8 was outsourced to some Canadian company, was never Mac-compatible, and lacked the features that made Netscape Netscape: integrated mail/address book, HTML composer, IRC, etc. So Version 9 is cross platform.
